What is ProntOral® in a sentence
ProntOral® is a colorless rinse-free mouthwash 250 ml , designed for antimicrobial cleaning and decolonization of the oral cavity and pharynx — chlorhexidine-free and alcohol-free .

Official indications
According to the official B|Braun catalogue, ProntOral® is indicated for:
- Decolonization of the oral cavity and pharynx by multidrug-resistant microbes (MRSA, VRE, ESBL)
- Prevention of dental plaque formation
- Prevention of caries
- Supportive care of gingivitis and periodontitis
- Inhibition of the growth, spread and transmission of multidrug-resistant microorganisms
- Support mechanical cleaning of the oral cavity
In addition to the official indications, it is used clinically for:
- Treatment of aphthous ulcers (oral ulcers)
- Treatment of halitosis
- Supportive care in mucositis of chemo-/radiotherapy
- VAP prevention in the ICU
- Pre-surgical MDRO decolonization bundle together with Prontoderm® Set
How to use
Daily oral hygiene (adults)
- Dosage: 10 ml stand-alone solution
- Frequency: 1–2 times daily
- Rinse duration: 30 seconds
- When: After brushing and flossing
- Rinse with water: No rinse-free
Targeted use for canker sores or bad breath
- Frequency: 3–4 times daily
- Duration: Until symptoms resolve (usually 5–10 days)
- Topical on canker sores: Application with a cotton swab directly to the lesion
Pre-surgical MDRO decolonization
- Start: 5 days before surgery
- Frequency: 2–3 times daily
- Combination: With Prontoderm® Solution + Foam + Wipes + Nasal Gel (Prontoderm® Set)
Oral care ICU (intubated patient)
- Frequency: Every 4 hours (6 applications/day)
- Procedure: 10 ml via brush/sponge + suction (not swallowed)
- Duration: Throughout intubation
Chemotherapy mucositis
- Onset: 7 days before start of treatment
- Frequency: 4–6 times daily
- Duration: Throughout treatment + 2 weeks later
Elderly at home
- Frequency: 2 times a day
- Application: With a sponge/pen if the patient cannot rinse
- Note: Always in a semi-sitting position (45°)
Where used clinically
- Hospitals — ICU, surgical departments, oncology clinics, pathology
- Nursing homes — daily oral care
- Home care — by caregivers, after training
- Dental offices — after scaling, extraction, implant
For which ages is it suitable
- Children under 4 years: Contraindicated (risk of swallowing)
- Children 4–12 years: With a reduced dose of 5 ml and always under supervision
- Adolescents and adults: Full dosage of 10 ml
- Elderly: Full dosage of 10 ml, particularly suitable due to good tolerance
Contraindications and caution
- Known hypersensitivity to biguanides (rare)
- Pregnancy and lactation: Not without medical advice
- Children <4 years: Contraindicated

Side effects
ProntOral® has an excellent safety profile. Rarely reported:
- Slight transient taste alteration (<5%)
- Dry mouth if used >6× daily
Unlike chlorhexidine, does not cause tooth staining, dysgeusia, or interaction with fluoride toothpaste.
Maintenance and storage
- Temperature: At room temperature (15–25°C), out of direct sunlight
- Shelf life sealed: 36 months
- Shelf life after opening: 8 weeks
- Children: Keep out of reach of children
- Note: Should not be swallowed in large quantities
