THE LIMIT OF LENGTH

B.Braun asks for 1 cm of margin on every side of the scar. Do the subtraction and the usable length of each size falls out on its own: the 5×7.5 covers 5.5 centimetres, the 2×14 twelve, the 10×18 sixteen. A sternotomy after cardiac surgery is 20 to 25 centimetres. A midline laparotomy reaches 30. With any other size you will have to join two pieces — and that is exactly where it peels first, leaving the scar uncovered along a line.
Length and width together
4×30 cm is 120 square centimetres in a strip that also has width: with the one-centimetre margin all round, one sheet covers a scar of up to 2 × 28 cm. It is the only size in the range that goes beyond sixteen centimetres of length. Silicone works the same way everywhere — it forms a closed, oxygen-permeable layer that limits water loss from the epidermis and keeps the area hydrated and protected, including from ultraviolet light, which darkens new scars. International scar management guidelines place silicone sheeting first among non-invasive measures. What this size adds is not a different action — it is that it reaches from one end of the scar to the other.

The limit that matters is not the type of scar but its state: the dressing only goes on a closed wound.

In practice

Before the first application
The wound must have closed completely and stitches or clips must be out. The skin should be clean and completely dry, with no cream or oil where the dressing will adhere.

Applying it
Choose or cut the sheet so that it overlaps the scar by at least 1 cm on every side. Place it without stretching it — stretching irritates the skin underneath.

The daily cycle — every 23 hours
The sheet stays on for almost the whole day. Once a day, roughly every 23 hours, take it off and run the cycle in order: clean the area with a mild wash — Softaskin is made for exactly this —, wash the sheet itself in lukewarm water with mild soap without rubbing, and dry both of them thoroughly. Drying is the critical part: a hairdryer on cool or lukewarm air does it quickly and completely — never hot air on the scar. Skin and sheet must both be completely dry before it goes back on; moisture left underneath is the number one reason a sheet loses its adhesion early.

When to change the sheet
The same sheet is reused. You do not change it by the calendar but when its adhesion is spent: when it no longer stays put on its own, lifts at the edges or shifts during the day. In practice that is usually 3 to 7 days — with careful washing and thorough drying it lasts towards the upper end. Then you open the next of the 5 sheets in the box.

When to stop
On irritation, rash, pain, signs of infection or unexpected worsening of the scar, stop immediately and contact your doctor. The dressing is not a substitute for medical follow-up.

My scar is from a sternotomy. When do I start?
Once the wound has closed completely and the stitches are out — never earlier, and never on an open or weeping surface. After cardiac surgery you are under your surgeon's follow-up: ask them first when the right moment is. A sternotomy is usually 20 to 25 centimetres, so one sheet covers the whole of it.
4×30 or 10×18 — which should I get?
It comes down to which dimension is the problem. If the scar is long — over sixteen centimetres — only the 4×30 reaches it in one piece. If it is short but wide, like a burn or a graft donor site, the 10×18 gives far more area. If it is both, look at length first: width can be solved with a second strip alongside, length cannot.
Can I cut it into smaller pieces?
Yes, B.Braun states so explicitly. It cuts into strips or squares with clean, dry scissors, before you peel off the backing film, always with 1 cm of margin around each scar. Avoid very sharp corners — rounded edges hold better. Whatever is left keeps clean and dry in the original packaging.
How far do 5 sheets go?
Each sheet is reused for 3 to 7 days, or for as long as it keeps its adhesion. Five whole sheets is 15 to 35 days. If you cut pieces, the 600 square centimetres in the box go very much further. For a 2 to 6 month course on a large scar, though, budget realistically for more than one box.
It is expensive. Is it worth it?
Per square centimetre it is not the expensive one in the range — it is cheaper than the 5×7.5 box and barely above the 10×18. The real question is not the price but the length: if your scar is under twelve centimetres and narrow, the 2×14 works out clearly cheaper and does the same job. And the honest second half, whatever the size: international guidelines put silicone first among non-invasive measures, but Cochrane describes the evidence as weak and prone to bias. A sensible first move — not a guarantee.
