Most people start
once it has already changed.
At two weeks the stitches come out, the skin looks closed, and the matter seems settled. Underneath, though, the scar is still alive: collagen goes on rearranging itself for months afterwards. During that time a scar can harden, raise, redden, pull when you bend, or itch. And that is usually when people start looking for something to do about it — once the scar has already taken its course. The window is not later; it opens the moment the wound closes.
A closed layer, moisture kept in
Silicone is not a drug and is not absorbed. It forms a closed, oxygen-permeable layer over the scar that limits water loss from the epidermis and keeps the area hydrated and protected — including from ultraviolet light, which darkens new scars. International scar management guidelines place silicone sheeting first among non-invasive measures, ahead of injections or laser. B.Braun specifies that the dressing is worn continuously, removed once a day for inspection and washing, and that the same sheet lasts 3 to 7 days.

How to apply it

Before the first application
The wound must have closed completely and stitches or clips must be out. The skin should be clean and completely dry, with no cream or oil where the dressing will adhere.

Applying it
Choose or cut the sheet so that it overlaps the scar by at least 1 cm on every side. Place it without stretching it — stretching irritates the skin underneath.

The daily cycle — every 23 hours
The sheet stays on for almost the whole day. Once a day, roughly every 23 hours, take it off and run the cycle in order: clean the area with a mild wash — Softaskin is made for exactly this —, wash the sheet itself in lukewarm water with mild soap without rubbing, and dry both of them thoroughly. Drying is the critical part: a hairdryer on cool or lukewarm air does it quickly and completely — never hot air on the scar. Skin and sheet must both be completely dry before it goes back on; moisture left underneath is the number one reason a sheet loses its adhesion early.

When to change the sheet
The same sheet is reused. You do not change it by the calendar but when its adhesion is spent: when it no longer stays put on its own, lifts at the edges or shifts during the day. In practice that is usually 3 to 7 days — with careful washing and thorough drying it lasts towards the upper end. Then you open the next of the 15 sheets in the box.

When to stop
On irritation, rash, pain, signs of infection or unexpected worsening of the scar, stop immediately and contact your doctor. The dressing is not a substitute for medical follow-up.

When do I start after a caesarean?
Once the wound has closed completely and the stitches or clips are out — never before. B.Braun is explicit: the dressing does not go on an open or infected wound. In practice most women get the go-ahead at the six-week check; ask your doctor at that appointment, because healing does not follow the calendar. What matters is not leaving it too long either: a scar remodels for months afterwards, and that is the window where silicone has something to offer.
Will it cover the whole caesarean scar?
Almost always, yes — and that is exactly why this size exists. A standard Pfannenstiel incision runs horizontally just above the pubic bone and measures 10 to 15 cm. The 14 cm sheet covers it in one piece, with no joins to peel apart. B.Braun asks for at least 1 cm of overlap beyond the edges of the scar, and the sheet can be cut with scissors if needed. If your incision is longer or vertical, look at the larger sizes in the range.
How many hours a day, and for how many months?
B.Braun specifies continuous 24-hour wear, with one removal a day so you can inspect and wash the skin underneath — usually at bath time. Treatment runs 2 to 6 months depending on the scar; older scars can need 3 months to a year. This is not a two-week job: consistency is half the point.
How long does one sheet last? Is one box enough?
The same sheet is reused for 3 to 7 days, or for as long as it keeps its adhesion. With 15 sheets in the box that works out at 45 to 105 days of treatment — half to all of the recommended 2 to 6 months. Between wears, clean the sheet with mild soap and lukewarm water, without rubbing, and let it air dry before putting it back on.
Does silicone actually work, or is it marketing?
You should have both halves of the answer. International scar management guidelines place silicone sheeting first among non-invasive measures — it is the first thing recommended, ahead of injections or laser. At the same time, the Cochrane review of silicone gel sheeting calls the evidence weak and the trials highly susceptible to bias. So: it is the widely accepted first choice, low risk and low cost, but nobody can guarantee you a result. Anyone who promises one is overselling.
Do I need anything else with it?
B.Braun makes all three steps, and we stock all three. Cleansing with Softaskin, a mild wash lotion for sensitive skin — the skin under the dressing needs washing every day, not scrubbing. Hydration with Linovera® Gel and hyaluronic acid, during the window when the scar is uncovered. And covering with the Askina Scar Repair. The dressing works on its own; the other two make the daily routine bearable, which is the reason most people abandon it.
