The colon produces gas constantly. With nowhere to go, a closed pouch inflates like a balloon: it shows under your clothes and, worse, it pulls the baseplate away at the edge — where almost every leak begins. The integrated 40 mm laminar filter lets gas escape slowly and filtered; B. Braun states it plainly, «to reduce odor and bag ballooning». It stops working in two cases: if it gets wet (which is why you close it with the patch before bathing) and if it clogs with very loose stool. In both, change the pouch.

B. Braun's guidance is to change when the pouch is about one third full, not when it is full — weight and gas are what lift the baseplate. Depending on your bowel that works out at once or twice a day. In practice this means a box of 30 is not a month for most people — it is about a fortnight. Most people change in the morning, when the bowel is quieter.

It is the same pouch with a different film. Transparent for the first weeks: the stoma is being watched and you can see without removing anything. Beige afterwards, because it does not show under light clothing and you are not reminded of the stoma all day. Many people keep both: transparent for checking, beige for going out. You can switch whenever you like — nothing else changes.

Yes, but one step first: close the filter with the patch provided for it. B. Braun says so itself — the filter should be closed for bathing, showering and water sports, because water ruins it. Once you are out, take the patch off and it works again on its own. Rinse with fresh water, pat dry, and after a long time in water change the pouch. Ask your stoma nurse the first time.

Probably not, and it is worth knowing before you order a month's worth. A closed pouch cannot be emptied: it fills and you discard it. With loose or liquid output it will fill within the hour and you will be throwing pouches away all day — expensive and exhausting. There the right product is a drainable pouch, emptied from the bottom. If you are not sure what you have, write to us describing the output and the operation you had — our stoma nurse will tell you.

Measure the stoma with the measuring guide in the box and cut 2–3 mm larger than its diameter. Not tight — it will press on the stoma; not too wide — stool will reach the skin. And measure again every week for six to eight weeks after surgery: the stoma shrinks. That is why cut-to-fit is the right choice at the start; pre-cut diameters (Ø25 to 45 mm) make sense once the size has settled.

Six things, all readable off the box: 1) Is there a filter, and how big? Without one, a closed pouch will balloon. 2) Is it non-woven on both sides or only on the outside? 3) Is the skin protector hydrocolloid, and in what proportion? 4) What cutting range does the single baseplate cover — one that cuts 10 to 70 mm carries you from day one to a settled stoma. 5) Does the same product also come transparent, so you need not change system after surgery? 6) And the most practical: compare cost per day of use, not per box — at one or two changes a day, a box of 30 is not a month.
