EOPYY and nephrostomy: what is covered, what are the codes, how is the prescription made?

EOPYY covers 100% of basic nephrostomy materials for all insured persons with a prescription from a doctor. However, the procedure and quantities are not always clear. This guide explains what you need to know as a patient or caregiver based on the most recent Government Gazette B' 5395/09-10-2025.

Note: The information is valid based on Government Gazette B' 5395/09-10-2025 (EOPYY Board Meeting 1054/18-09-2025) which amends the Unified Health Benefits Regulation (EKPY). The legislation is updated periodically — please confirm with your supplier before ordering.

What is the insurance classification

Nephrostomy is classified under ICD-10 codes Z93.6 (condition of presence of artificial urinary stoma) and Z43.6 (care of artificial urinary stoma). The patient participation is 0% and the maximum monthly expense reimbursed by EOPYY is 270€ .

The following specialists have the right to prescribe: Pathologist, Nephrologist, Surgeon, Pediatric Surgeon, General Practitioner, Urologist, Oncologist, Agricultural .

1-piece or 2-piece system?

EOPYY covers both types of urine collection systems — the choice depends on your needs:

1-piece system

The bag and base are integrated in one piece. More discreet, easier to apply. Change the entire piece each time. Ideal for: active patients, younger users, those who want a low profile.

Two-piece system

Bag and base separate — change bag more often and base less often. More economical in the long run, less skin wear. Ideal for: sensitive skin, patients with reduced mobility, chronic cases.

The 5 coverage options according to the Greek Government Gazette

In the opinion, your doctor chooses one of the 5 options. Each option defines the maximum monthly quantities:

What can go wrong

“Prescription not approved”

This most often happens when: the ICD-10 code is missing or incorrect, the quantity exceeds the limit, or the health booklet is not active. Your doctor can correct the prescription. If the problem persists, contact EOPYY.

“The supplier does not accept the prescription”

Only certified EOPYY providers can fill such prescriptions. Confirm that the supplier has a contract. Traumacare has been a contracted provider since 2014 .

“I cannot find a specific product”

The same code may correspond to products from different companies. If you want a specific brand (e.g. B Braun), ask your doctor to list it.

Additional materials outside EOPYY

Some value-added products (e.g. advanced stabilizers, more sophisticated film dressings, pre-filled saline syringes) are not all covered by EOPYY. Traumacare also offers them at special pricing.
