Good news emerged at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society, ENDO 2021 , which took place from March 20 to 23, 2021. Of great interest are the new findings regarding the impact of vitamin D supplements on the progression of diabetes .
Dr. Anastasios G. Pittas, a physician at Tufts Medical Center in Boston , reviewed and evaluated the results of three large trials on whether vitamin D supplements can reduce the risk of diabetes in people with prediabetes. Before I knew it, I was leading D2d, a multicenter clinical trial on the safety and effectiveness of vitamin D supplements in reducing the risk of diabetes in high-risk individuals.
The results of all 3 trials showed that vitamin D supplements reduced the risk of developing diabetes by about 13% .
Dr. Pittas also found that the protective effect of vitamin D supplements may be higher in individuals who have low 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels (less than 12 ng/mL), since the risk reduction was proportional to serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels.
